Robin Linden is breaking on through to the other side of the servers, and had her fare-well party inworld today with residents, sponsored by the loveable Ham Rambler of the Dublin sim, with music supplied by Dizzy Banjo, Grace McDunnough, Cylindrian Rutabega, and Frogg Marlowe. It was a bittersweet occasion, with people reading out their last goodbyes and of course the occasion wasn't complete without a gaggle of Woodbury University "students" appearing and crashing the sim shortly after Philip Linden arrived to say a few words.
Robin used her waning god-powers to TP some old resident friends to the sim who were having trouble getting back on it after it crashed. I was struggling to take pictures through the gray (had put on 512 thinking that might make it better, but that's actually not advisable on a laggy sim). Even Jarod showed up for a last round of "All Hail the Central Holy Grid!"
I wish I had the testimonials to publish but I don't yet. I personally prepared a 3,000 word tribute but then Ham Rambler told me to cut it back and I got down to just this:
"Robin. Words Fail. Prokofy".
Hehehe j/k j/k, I didn't actually write the 3,000 words, but Robin IM'd me to ask if I had them -- I just love Robin! : )
There was some very special moments, including when Robin said to Woodbury goon Alyx Stoklitsky
[11:35] Robin Linden: watch it Alyx - I still have my god powers!! :P
Perfect SL moment! Treasure them!
Lots of people were angling to try to say something momentous and capture not only Robin's attention in the last hours of her current Linden godhood, but presumed future godess status in some other game or world down the line, as she was in the Sims (Electronic Arts) before this gig, and might move on to another incarnation -- in which case we will stampede after her!
Tao Takashi started blustering about opensource Open Sim open bullshit and I gave him a few pushbacks. Seriously, why they keep flogging that nonsense as the "Future of the Metaverse" with its empty-headed and communistic "interoperability" I cannot fathom. Why it had to be flogged on *this* occasion in particular was beyond me.
Noting how Blondin Linden and Katrin Linden arrived on the scene sort of stealthily (Char popped in to say hi and then left), I decided to ask a Kremlin succession question. You know, like when Chernenko died, and Gorbachev was made head of his funeral commission for the ceremony on Red Square, so you knew he was going to be the next General Secretary.
Hence:
11:10] Champagne Flute : Mmm..
[11:10] Champagne Flute : Mmm..
[11:10] Prokofy Neva: Robin, which Linden are you passing the baton too? *watches*
[11:10] Champagne Flute : That was deliciously fizzy, Robin Linden!
[11:10] Persimmon Gjellerup: Callie!!
[11:10] Persimmon Gjellerup: great to see you too
[11:10] Ham Rambler holds his breath waiting for Robin's reply
[11:10] Champagne Flute : Mmm..
[11:10] Callie Cline takes teh baton adn runs
[11:10] Morgaine Dinova: JenzZa .... have faith, and breath gently ;-)
[11:10] Hypatia Callisto: heee
[11:10] Callie Cline: and gives it to prok
[11:10] Katrin Linden: lol
[11:10] JenzZa Misfit cues a drumroll!
[11:10] Desmond Shang: hugs to all, and *big hugs* Robin, sadly RL intervenes
[11:11] JenzZa Misfit: ty Morgaine :0 * on tippy toes*
[11:11] Champagne Flute : That was deliciously fizzy, Emmie Fairymeadow!
[11:11] Robin Linden: No baton pass Prok
[11:11] Ham Rambler: Bye Desmond
[11:11] Callie Cline: yes!
[11:11] Callie Cline: hahahahah
[11:11] Prokofy Neva: : (
Sigh.
I looked at the profile of Katrin Linden:
European Business Programs Specialist at Linden Lab. I support the European Solution Providers, manage the Community Gateway program and handle regAPIs.
Also see: http://secondlifegrid.net/programs
Here's somebody who manages Desmond Shang's Oxford Caledon then.
I get it.
So then I looked at the profile of Blondin Linden:
Supporting Mainland Communities
Office Hours: Wednesdays @ 330pm SLT
Office @ Hanley 205/218/25
Oh, ok.
I IM'd Blondin and asked him some questions about what this meant, this "Supporting Mainland Communities" which was something I had never seen. He said it meant mainly those communities like Nautilus, Bay City, USS, which the Lindens manufactured from the top down.
So, yeah. The fake communities the Lindens make by coopting or manufacturing "communities," and this "community gateway" stuff which is of course a hustle of the first order in ways I've already blogged about, because of the very steep criteria involved.
That's what you can say sort of replaces what Robin Linden did during her era, which was help the community as a sort of broader concept with things like Linden Office Hours and group tools and just general *caring*.
That of course is going to be impossible to replace.
Last manifestation of Robin Harper as Robin Linden from the Lab, server-side...
[11:36] Robin Linden: I'll see you all on the other side, as they say
[11:36] Robin Linden: ciao all, and don't forget to get in touch with me as Taliesin Protagonist

oh so that is what happened?
I was on mainland and it was vanishing like the langoleirs were eating it so i logged out.
I doubt Robin even knows who I am so no sense in me adding to the lag. Besides with such celebrities as one person that is dedicated to harming me financially there i am certain i would not have been welcome anyway.

It made me cry.

It wasn't Woodbury thank you, It was the Patriotic Nigras...
Stupid Prok

Does this mean you're not coming to Alyx's and I's wedding? >:

Ciaran Laval repeats this completely stupid meme that somehow the sim crashing was caused by some sort of overloading of too many people.
Utter bullshit.
I watched the numbers closely.
When Nidol Slazar came on, who is always the herald of a sim crash on my sims whenever he arrives (he's a Woodbury regularly), I looked at my watch. I looked at the sim numbers and kept watching them. There were a mere 82 people on the sim when it crashed first. Nidola and all those other idiots from Woodbury arrived and it's no accident, comrade.
One thing Nidol did was wear that ridiculously insane prim-heavy slow-loading avatar. He always does. And he should have been flicked off the server. These people do not mean well, and one of the problems is that people like JenZa plead ignorance, and claim they've never heard of the Woodbury goons and their antics.
if the Dublin staff had followed my advice and expelled some of those regular, chronic, obvious troublemakers, the sim would have not crashed.
Next time, try it, and you'll see.

No Ciaran Laval assumed it was due to too many people as Ciaran Laval has been in the situation where more than 40 people causes problems. It's not a meme, it's a consistent issue. 82 real avatars? That's a performance hit.
If someone deliberately went out of their way to ruin Robin's party they should be banned forever.
The only sims I've ever been on where 82 avatars just causes major lag have been ones where traffic bots are in use.
Ciaran Laval also said that it was irrelevant in the greater scheme of things as we were there for Robin, not Linden Lab.
Posted by: Ciaran Laval | February 13, 2009 at 06:48 PM
Ciara, islands can only *100*. This had 82. It was laggy, but not ready to crash. Sims do not crash merely because they have avatars on them.
Yes, the Woodburies deliberately went out of their way to crash the sim. Duh? The Lindens are able to see on their servers who uses scripts for this -- or I hope they can!
Posted by: Prokofy Neva | February 13, 2009 at 06:57 PM
Yea, When I used to be an estate manager for BnT I have seen 75 authentic avatars bring down a sim. I've also seen 30 people with Xcite *ahem* 'body parts' take down a sim. So yea.
Also worth noting if someone did crash the sim, Lindens would have taken action. If Nidol did crash the sim, he would have been banned. He still appears in search.
Posted by: Jim Schack. | February 13, 2009 at 07:05 PM
Sim crash due to overloading? I think it was fairly obvious what happened as Nidol was also the source point for the static-y audio interference that was concurrent with the crash.
All in all it seemed a very fond tribute from some of the more experienced residents for Robin.
Dumb luck that a newbie like me took the day off work and stumbled in to the party.
Posted by: Corcosman Voom | February 13, 2009 at 07:09 PM
I did feel that the amount of time it took to get the sim back online was odd, but I assumed Anne O'Toole's comments suggested a grid wide issue. I was offline and unable to login to the grid for over fifteen minutes so I didn't suspect griefing as griefing shouldn't stop me logging in, it might stop me getting back to the sim, but not logging in.
I don't know the Woodburies like you do and I don't want to think that anyone would go out of their way to ruin Robin's party, that would be extremely sad as the vast majority of people were there by invite and Robin was leaving, what possible points could be scored?
Posted by: Ciaran Laval | February 13, 2009 at 07:13 PM
A class 5 region with 82 avatars can get laggy but *rarely* if ever a crash issue.
Sidewinder was there; we could ask his professional opinion.
All in all a pretty good event, but I was finding that avatars a bit distant were not rendering for me. I couldn't even see Khamon, Qie and Nika sitting on the wall until I semi-accidentally cammed over to look at the big poster.
Posted by: Desmond Shang | February 13, 2009 at 07:29 PM
This is going to bug me, my comments don't read logically. I seriously don't want to believe that someone would ruin Robin's party in this fashion.
Having said that, the reason I couldn't login was likely due to my av still being flagged as logged in due to the crash. I assumed that at the time, what I didn't consider was malice. After the crash there were still a lot of people on the sim and although it was laggy and hard to move I didn't crash until just after Robin left.
I guess I just don't want to assume it was griefing and I really hope it wasn't.
Posted by: Ciaran Laval | February 13, 2009 at 07:34 PM
Nidol and the other grief kiddies who stalked me throughout the party, like Alyx, who kept standing next to me and stalking me around, and that other idiot with the teddy bear av who kept dancing on my head, are all quite capable of crashing sims without leaving a fingerprint. They show up, they don't leave finger prints yet...the sim crashes. Happens all the time. Then Jim Schack arrives to laugh with malicious glee and pretend that he is shocked, shocked, that the sim crashed. Er, your winnings, sir.
Honestly, Ciaran were you born yesterday? Of course they crashed it. The began the noise static just as Philip was trying to say something, then, not long after, the sim crashed. Because they are assholes. Attention seeking malicious retarded assholes. Why you can't grasp that, after seeing them do this to me and others for years, I'll never know.
EVEN if you somehow give these assholes the benefit of the doubt, you'd surely have to concede that arriving on the sim in a huge-ass avatar with multitidues of prims and textures that take an hour to rez is just plain fucking inconsiderate. Doing that *and* standing next to Robin so that no one can take a picture without having your big fat ugly retarded multi-prim avatar in the pictures is double inconsiderate.
Ham or one of the others should have just given him one warning to at least move, if not change avatars, then get him off the sim. I asked him to move -- and ditch the avatar. He refused. And two of the woodbury goons immediately hive-minded to me in IMs (they always function as a hive network) that no one was going to move or change their avatar for the sake of decency.
Anyway, Robin is well rid of them now. We're still here. And they will go on seeking negative attention forever. Exposing them and documenting them is part of the fight for civilization. It starts with refuting the Big Lie that they don't really do what they do.
Posted by: Prokofy Neva | February 13, 2009 at 08:23 PM
God Prok, you are fucking retarded...
there where no woodbury people there.
You fail at your investigation.
It was clearly PN, As I was there and witnessed the attack.
"Anyway, Robin is well rid of them now. We're still here. And they will go on seeking negative attention forever. Exposing them and documenting them is part of the fight for civilization. It starts with refuting the Big Lie that they don't really do what they do"
Lol Prok, you lie out your ass 24/7. I sense a bit of RAGE coming from you.
Posted by: HurpDurp | February 13, 2009 at 08:35 PM
"The began the noise static just as Philip was trying to say something, then, not long after, the sim crashed."
The noise static was coming from someone's throw-away alt not even in the Woodbury group.
Protip Prok: it was the PN, not Woodbury.

so, cause me damage in SL or SL, girlie, off you go. You are not welcome here. Byes.

I would like to share a RL story of Griefers...This winter the UK had snow *smiles big*. So me and a fellow resident built up an igloo with the kids. Quite a nice one too (for UK), say 6ft tall and 6ft wide, a bit bee-hivey but nice. I said 'this'll be knocked down before midnight'. Low and behold, at about 9:30 that evening the lul'z could be heard from outside. By 10:30 the igloo was a pile of snowbricks. Griefers.
My message is -always back up any work you do- (we took some lovely photies of the igloo) and -do not engage with the griefers- (going into the street to 'take-on' the igloo raiders would only have magnified their lulz by a factor of 10). Anyway, griefers suck.
Fact is though, a question remains..Did griefers crash the party sim? or was it a load based hiccup?
Posted by: Monk Zymurgy | February 14, 2009 at 06:19 AM
Prok, as a "victim" of these "attacks" (I'm attempting to get the facts and stay NEUTRAL) by your own logic, it is your fault, why? well if we take how your logic has worked on Vint's page about the creative commons copywrite.. and how its all technocommuist propaganda by such logic if Robin's party is griefted it means you should have stayed home KNOWING that people were following you and causing you problems and having that solved before you attended as opposed to showing up and acting like there was nothing going on.
Do you see how your logic works yet? Blame the victim. Personally I don't see any harm done if the Lindens themselves didn't see it as such... and please stop spouting off rumours that this PN is taking down the grid, because it just makes the myth more appealing for them.
Posted by: AlterEgoTrip Svenska | February 14, 2009 at 06:28 AM
When a griefer says "griefing saves lives" they mean that griefing directs you away from (in this case) Second Life and towards your apparently neglected Real Life. In short, the griefer wants you to "stay home". Advocating that the solution to being griefed is to "stay home" is advocating the cause of the griefer. Ergo, anyone who counsels it is, in fact, a griefer themselves.
Congratulations.

Oh right, it's the 14th so this one's for you, Prok. Watching Woodbury screech about how it was all PN is like watching the Marxist-Leninist Party calling the Communist Party red, err, black, no red!
Happy Valentines :-)

I believe that Prok and Ichabod and a few other of their alts are responsible for a grieft attack on Eldora on the properties of Ewan Mureaux- Please prove to me that this is not true..
because I believe you lot would do such a thing to create an alarmist atmosphere but you see because of what you say here, I believe this is more than likely true. And I only got wind of it via someone else... good thing you can't attack all the areas with vendors and drop boxes.. but one never knows.

You are now walking the thin line between libel and lunacy, Ego.
