'The Cloud' is a classic example of an over-hyped, over-used, and often mis-applied term.

Just like a cloud, it's nebulous and often used as filler to make tired technology seem somehow more relevant and 'hip'.

In the end, the real definition is a cluster of machines providing on-demand, distributed computing power. It's very non-sexy, and non-exciting. But it is useful in many ways, and it is a paradigm shift.

Oh but the mighty Cloud, conjures up so many visions and analogies, it's pretty hard to resist.

The Cloud: Just when you thought the concept of centralized mainframe computing was dead...

Here's a great example I found recently:

See how the all-powerful Cloud will protect you from all the bad things, and make everything run faster.

They don't say how, it's just the Magic of the Cloud!

Would you have felt safer if it was called 'the farm' or 'the meadow'. If you prefer urban to rural, maybe 'the parking lot'. I think 'the stash-box' would have been cool, or 'the clown car'. Oh well cloud it is then.

@C.Hax .. yeah, you knew where you were with mainframes..reel to reel tape drives..hard discs the size of humvee hubcaps, all owned by one single corporation, buttoned down, under control..available in many colors, cream or gray....safe.

What happened to th Joni Mitchell lyric comment? I thought it was quite fitting.
