umm... it is a boulder. Is there something more to this?
(/me laughs at the increasing number of turd-like sculpties on SLM sold as rocks)

No, it's not a boulder!
It's a pet rock. It was starving, so I over-fed it. Then it kept getting fater, gave birth to a pebble, and shows no sign of stopping.

the hilarious part is that these boxes of food run out fast with only 10 services and cost $10. If it weren't for Horus Vale helping me feed the thing, I'd be going broke.
It also talks and says things like "I think I'll just hang around here" or "I'm hungry" or "I'm happy" etc.

Clearly making visually compelling and stunning content is the wrong business to be in.
Calling all rocks and suckers: SL needs you.

Well, texturing isn't everything, Ann. some of the things I like best in SL are sort of homely.
Like this rock. I've really gotten to like this rock. I don't care if she doesn't have the most beautiful textures. She's kind of lumpy and misshapen. But that's ok. She comes when I call, and...ok, well, she doesn't actually come when I call because she's always in the exact same place but she's always there for me...well, I mean, she doesn't have any other place to be but where she is.
But look. This pet is really the ideal pet. Because it doesn't die if put back in inventory. It doesn't fall over dead when it is hungry requiring expensive $100 hospital kits. It just gets 99 percent hungry and really mean, but it won't die.
There's lots to recommend in a pet rock.
And really, textures are not everything.
Someone once said that Botany's Grove is like a Texas fish camp -- and they said that as an insult.
But I like that it's like a Texas fish camp.

Maybe you should call it a moon rock given it's texture. Anyway it sucks that crap like that will drive out content creators like me.
Anyway enjoy your rock. I'm sure Hamlet and rodvik will be pleased.

I fail to see the fun in a breedable rock, but hey, you probably don't like my quad bike. Tastes differ.
What's more amazing is that someone sees a rock and actually thinks it drives out content creators. If this is what people want, then it's not driving you out -- it's telling you to make something the people want to buy.
My my, *me* teaching *you* freemarket capitalism, Ann. Who'da thunk that.

I don't know why you keep banging on the texture, Ann. It's a perfectly serviceable rock texture that seems to fit into my woods there. If there are better ones, let me know, but this one is BREEDABLE so it would have to be VERY good!
In fact, I wish he had different breeds and rares, I would have a family of them. Maybe Menubar Memorial will do that, I will have to ask.
I'm failing to understand why my embracing of this homely rock and its perhaps sub-optimal texture is going to "drive out good content creators". It makes no sense to me. Because I'm happy to buy very good showy rocks for my rentals landscaping if they are offered, and one doesn't prevent the other, i.e. the operative feature of this rock is its breedability; the operative feature of another rock would be its beautiful texture and physical properties.
But what is this REALLY about? Mesh politics? A fear and a hatred that people won't buy possibly more expensive mesh and will stick to prims and sculpties?
Well, yeah, they will. That is, I'm sure I will. Because I never made the transition out of prims to sculpties, really -- I don't like most sculpty objects because they first show as balloons on my poor graphics card set up (and by "poor" I mean what I can get a Best Buy this year).
I don't like the oversoft look in a world of rigid edges that I became used to -- and that probably won't change. Maybe someone new will acquire a different taste.
If I also see mesh as something that is destroying the livlihoods of people I've patronized for 6 years, I will also not be supporting mesh. People like Menubar I value for their fun and creativity, even if their texture may not be up to your standards on this particular object. And if mesh somehow threatened to destroy his business in things he's made so far, I would feel defensive of him. Of course, he's skilled enough that he will probably go make the mesh things, but some won't, and I will likely go on patronizing them.
For example, if Barnesworth somehow did not cross into mesh and turn all his lovely prim houses into mesh, I would go on buying his prim houses.
We went through these fashions with hair. First it was appearance-mode hair that simply some people learned to make better; then it was some kind of texture hair; then it was prim hair; then it was sculpty hair. And you either went along for the ride or you didn't.
I have no idea how mesh will look. So far mesh seems to be something that people I really don't like in SL -- the furry types who make giant insects and monsters and swords and whatnot and insist on everyone making way for their notions of culture and politics and ban other people from the JIRA.
So far, mesh for me is very much associated with the politics of Reed Steamroller, who thinks the usually stupid-ass geek things, like "Facebook will go dormant" and "AOL is a failure" and "Prokofy is crazy" for criticizing open source software and blah blah blah. People who make films telling me to "Deal with It" get a big push back telling them to fuck off.
So there's a lot for the mesh lobby to do to win over someone like me who sees them as politically motivated, self-interested, and disruptive for the sake of disruption -- like every software just "has to have an update" and have planned obsolescence.

Hey Prok - I think the SL Pet Rock is a interesting idea. Though, I can see how it could get out of hand. The rock shown is actually twice the size. The other half is under the surface. So you could use edit to push it down into the ground more to make more room as it grows and keep the lot from being cluttered. Only the top of the mother rock needs show above the surface to have the Stats and messages show up and to feed it.
It does seem to eat a lot for something that does not move however, so I sent you another box of food.
If it can be moved, I think you might want to relocate the baby rock to prevent crowding. Rock on dude. - Horus

Thanks so much for the food! Yes, I think I will have to partly bury these big rocks, they are taking over.

I have some friends who have a small family of these breedable rocks.
They are very aware of its ridiculousness and that very fact makes it a great centrepiece for bad jokes, one-liner puns, silly spoonerisms, a daft showpiece for visitors and a target of exaggerated love and affection...and once it had given birth, well, there was no stopping them!
The point is, they find it fun. They laugh together about it. They enjoy its sheer silliness.
The quality of the texturing rather misses the point.
I doubt very much that their love of their rock will affect their purchases of other creators' creations at all.
Good luck to them, I say, and the creator.

A pet rock has to be less laggy than chickens, turtles, horses or rabbits.
The texture looks fine to me. Maybe it was designed for a smaller rock so it looks a bit off on this giant one but as Prok says, that's not the point.
