A curious -- but not so curious -- coincidence.
Recently, of all things, Skills Hak (AKA Skills Hax) shows up after years to grief me again. He sends me an obnoxious teleport invitation "join me" repeatedly -- this is a form of griefing even one time. It's deliberate. It's letting you know that "I'm still here to bother you". The hope is that you'll absent-mindedly click on it. Often the purpose is to "let me know" there's a new griefer location or re-spawning of the Woodbury island once again. I don't even remember the sims, not sure it was Insilico which is his much-FICed and outed sim featured by the Lindens because it's all about futuristic robot metal stuff. Sad.
Right at the same time as Skills Hak is trying to get me to "come to the party," suddenly another frequent-flyer griefer materializes after a long hiatus -- Ryokoshi Revestel, who always pretends he isn't griefing by leaving the griefing heavy-lifting to his network of pals. That way he can coordinate attacks but not appear to do them, and then let an alt take the rap.
I discover its Ryokoshi because first, some idiot with a name like 54321 rents a cabin and then begins making demands. Content has to be removed. A trespassers has to be removed.
The new "tenant" complains that "a little black boy is bothering me" and now I realize what's up -- it's the 4chan/Woodbury/whatever remnants merely trying to waste my time.
I TP to the region and see by their avatars, groups, and actions -- they are now spamming crap everywhere -- that they are griefers so I boot them all. I even give the idiot a refund which he doesn't deserve. Oh, then I see not only Ryokoshi is prowling on the lawn nearby, but a variation on the Fatty Kidd avatar with the same names and groups. You would think these infantiles would have grown up by now.
So -- funny, that coincidence, Skills Hak's TP and these idiots. But of course, they go together.
I have no idea as I haven't heard from these people in awhile, but I don't log in as much.
But now I see what may be connected -- fat heads, Linden deification, feelings of impunity.
Note this chat log making the rounds of Sluniverse and SL blogs:
[15:57] Oz Linden: maybe another commit hook test...
[15:57] Jonathan: Oz, do you still want me to file a storm for those gsavedsettings that should be cached or
[15:57] Phoenix-Firestorm Viewer Rocks: a lot of the headers need to be updated anyway to have the correct file name in thtem, or to add the file name to them thats missing currently
[15:57] Jonathan: do you want to look at the whole lot of them as a bigger study?
[15:58] Jonathan: (the settings in the music playing code)
[15:59] Oz Linden: Jonathan... sure, a collection of settings caching improvements would be most welcome
[16:00] Jonathan: I'll need that code from Skills Hax then
[16:00] Oz Linden: Tank... I ran a script to check that recently, and was intimidated by the number of files it would touch
[16:00] Mona: The one of Emerald "fame"?
[16:01] Jonathan: Oz, you had another prject in the works, and that was eliminating references to "dead" settings
[16:01] Ima Mechanique: Oz any news for onRegionChange best practise?
[16:01] Jonathan: from settings.xml
[16:01] Oz Linden: Skills has been making an apparently sincere effort to be helpful for quite some time now
Note the avatar "Phoenix Firestorm Viewer Rocks" (?!) and the emphasis added.
Long-time students of Second Life and third-party viewer thugs like Emerald (subsequently re-named Phoenix after it arose from the ashes of a lot of bans for major-league griefing) and then subsequently named Firestorm will understand the problem here.
The Lindens are once again letting griefers at their viewer code.
Of course, as it is "open source" this can be hard to stop, yet they have an elaborate third-party viewer policy and do stop it occasionally.
As Andromeda explains, compressing about three years of Second Life pre-history:
Ok wait... you mean Skills Hax, notorious for the Emerald Viewer debacle (along with a handful of others), and who was essentially forced out and the imminent collapse of the most popular TPV of the time mandated by Linden Lab as a result, is and has been working on and contributing code all buddy buddy with Linden Lab all this time?
Of course, I've always assumed that because Skills Hax has always had impunity.
He would hang out with Emerald griefers blatantly. Once he came to my office sim of Alston and hung in the air spewing particles and crap directly, himself. That's why he's in the ban list there. He endorsed and participated in griefing, in other words of the common 4chan kind.
But that's nothing compared to the major-league sophisticated griefing he engaged in with his CDS Gemini device (still for sale on the Marketplace) that was a privacy-stripper of people's IP addresses which outed their alts under the guise of "security" -- or so it was told (all done in the name of "security" of content). Here's the back story I covered then. Other people with devices of this sort, including some notorious ones, got banned, yet somehow he was able still to remain and sell his. I'd love to get some technical commentary on why that's the case, maybe it's due to some "notification" device or some fig-leaf.
I’m trying very hard to parse this information... because really Skills didn’t change and suddenly see the error of (his) ways. But it seems like one of more notorious of the group (maybe except Phox/LonelyBluebird) wasn’t really exiled but given a chance to contribute to the official viewer instead as a consolation prize for having the biggest competition to the official viewer be dismantled
As we all recall, Phox/Lonely Bluebrid and several other notorious types not only engaged in egregious griefing of me -- infamously killed chickens over and over, in large batches, at a time when the Sion Chicken was popular with tenants so that they really harmed my business -- they did much more big-time stuff and finally Fractured Crystal was caught in one of those capers where he used files in the viewer to hijack people's browsers and force them to visit another site, making them unwilling accomplices in a massive DdOS attack.
That he was attacking another griefer in an intra-griefer war -- and that griefer was an even worse character in my book as he had constantly crashed my sims for ages -- didn't matter. The Lindens couldn't have a massive breach of faith like that in a third-party viewer.
Remember the war of Emerald and Woodbury, where Woodbury ratted out Emerald for this attack on their guy and then Emerald returned the favour by getting the goods on Woodbury to get them permabanned once again -- this time a bit more permanently? (They had another reincarnation after that related to Steam, but then Steam never came to pass and they left, having cost the Lindens real business this time, and perhaps finally getting the Lindens concentrated on keeping them out.)
Mona Eberhard at this to say:
It apparently is. And none of the TPV devs at the meeting even raised an eyebrow about it. She’s been working with Jonathan Yap for quite some time. And no one but mee in that meeting thought it was a problem. NO ONE. Mind you, she’s not working on a TPV, but on the official viewer.
And I agree with Will; this is a big deal. And no, I don’t want to hear any “second chances” bullcrap. She’s had too many of them and having her work on LL’s official viewer does a lot to destroy whatever good faith was left between company and community. Perhaps some people at the Lab think we have the memory of a Greek voter (i.e. that of a goldfish). But they’re wrong.
It is scary -- not just a TPV, not just the usual open source script kiddies group grope with an indulgent Linden, but the Great and Powerful Oz Linden, and the official viewer.
And at a time when the viewer down the road from Project Interesting can cache more, and for the first time cache scripted objects to put on the hard drive. That may or may not be relevant; I ask the question.
Again: This may not be relevant, but I refuse to be told "FUD" and "Shut up". This isn't good.
And the way you know it isn't good is by the signs of impunity that these hackers always display, their gang colours, if you will: attacks on me, as a critic and as "low hangingfruit" as they see it, as a mainland rentals landlord.
When you see me being griefed and harassed, you may think, oh, so what, he deserves it.
But you could also zoom out to understand what that is a symptom of, what I am the canary in the coal mine for:
A sense of impunity, that they can do no wrong that the Lindens will punish.
For the record, Skills Hak denies the claims of griefing (but that's because he coordinated with others to grief and rarely did hands-on griefing, although he couldn't resist with me) and denies the claims of copybotting and privacy busting, although that's not my understanding of the product he sold, endlessly discussed on Sluniverse.com and of course as Mona Eberhardt explains, properly questioned by Tateru Nino
I simply don't believe his alibis which you can read here on Eternal Metaverse.
It's too bad Mona Eberhardt imagines re a purported witch hunt against Skills Hak, "You’re following Prokofy Neva’s footsteps in seeing (or, to be more precise, inventing) conspiracies and witch hunts against you."
Mona has never been on my sims most likely and has never seen these serial griefers and harassers for years on end. There isn't any conspiracy; it was an open war that wasn't hidden at all and didn't pretend to be a "witch hunt". That's ridiculous, and of course those paying attention know that as do the Lindens.
Mona also goes into a knowier-than-thou shtick about how DDoS attacks aren't really harmful and don't really do any damage. Nonsense. Of course they do. They cost time and money to clean up, and it doesn't matter if they don't ruin data or hardware, they are destructive, especially when repeated. A crashing of a server in SL *is* a DDoS attack, and they really do cause harm. It would likely take weekly attacks of this nature on Mona herself to "get" this.
Regrettably, as always happens in the bullying atmosphere of Sluniverse.com and SL in general, the original poster at Slun felt she had to back down from her accurate charges about Skills Hax.
No matter, Skills' alibis are not credible, the double-talking about the Emerald Viewer is bullshit, and the concerns about this person being actually filing code into the official viewer remain.
He claims in this thread that he now has "no time" for the SL viewer because of "real life" so you can "put your pitchforks away," he claims.
Maybe in the meantime Oz got wise; who knows.
Naturally people focused on the "teledildonics" (sigh). But...Note also "Grief Bucket" and "Onyx" merging. Huh? Provocative much?! Remember Onyx? Why would the Lindens allow to be committed to their code the "grief bucket" from Onyx?! Or more to the point, why even allow a joke about it? It shows impunity.
Of course, the entire thing may be a hoax -- um, note the coded bit about "drama" and "mosh". Since I don't see it at the Atlassian thing, I have to wonder.
Skills does a fatuous Eddie Haskell star turn in the Sluniverse thread claiming that we all misunderstood the Emerald scandal's, um, complexity, and that we are merely spreading FUD and rumours and gosh, this gives the Open Source program at Second Life a bad name.
Well, yeah, because it does rightly have a bad name for not only Emerald but the sons of Emerald and now this.
And harassment of me as I've indicated is the sign of the sense of impunity these people feel. Remember, I haven't IM'd or contacted or written about Skills Hax in years, yet he crosses the street to bother me and sends me griefer TPs just as I'm being griefed on my sims. That's how it works.
